FREE Drama Workshop: Guilty as Charged

Draycott writer, Alan Dawson, has created a free drama workshop to which he hopes he can encourage local men to attend. The workshop is focused upon a short play he is developing, Guilty as Charged, which explores aspects of men’s mental health/ wellbeing - the writer stresses that no experience in the performing arts is necessary.

NB: Workshops #1 and #2 are men only activities; workshop/ performance #3 is mixed.

The workshop runs over three successive Tuesday evenings and is based at the Elephant Rooms, Draycott.

Guilty as Charged – short synopsis.

Sam the Man is finding the world a difficult place to live in as he reaches middle-age. He is struggling with his sense of self and his identity is being torn asunder because of uncertainty. The impact of the modern world is weighing heavily on Sam’s psyche as he struggles to negotiate communication, relationships, community, employment, fatherhood, bereavement etc.

Outline of Workshop #1 – Tuesday, 30th April 2024 @ 7- 8.30pm

•    Light warm up exercises.
•    Group exercise to explore communication… or lack of it!
•    Participant readthrough of Guilty as Charged.
•    Discussion of the themes explored in the readthrough.

Outline of Workshop #2 – Tuesday, 7th May 2024 @ 7 – 8.30pm

•    Light warm up exercises.
•    Rehearsal of Guilty of Charged for performance Tuesday 14th May 2024.

NB: There is no obligation to be part of the performance, but participation is encouraged and supported. There are different roles besides acting/ reading, such as sound effects.

Outline of Workshop #3. Performance of Guilty as Charged –Tuesday 14th May @ 7 – 9pm (This is during Mental Health Awareness week).

For me the arts are all about inclusion and the opportunity to try new things - the Elephant Room is a safe place to do so. After the reading of Guilty as Charged, the audience, supported by actors, will have the opportunity to perform a short reading of Jane Eyre… Don’t you Dare, which explores the dynamics between young and old in a college. Although both plays explore serious themes, they are both driven by humour – so hopefully they should make you chuckle!

I have been writing drama for over ten years and several of my plays have been produced in the East Midlands. It is through my writing that I learn about myself and the world that I live in - hopefully my writing helps others to learn about themselves and their worlds too.

Resource yourself through the elements

In our current day and age we can easily find ourselves pulled along by the busy-ness of life and even sometimes feel depleted and suddenly heading towards burn out.

Finding ways to resource ourselves (‘fill our cup’), and being able to access those resources regularly, can help us to maintain emotional balance and a sense of personal well-being. Our resources can be used to lift us into higher energy states, or lower our energy and ground us. 

You are invited to join Rachel, our Psychotherapeutic Breathworker, to enjoy an introduction to each of the elements and the different ways they can be used to resource yourself in support your personal process . 

Take a deep dive interactive in to each element, feeling in to which element(s) you resonate with most and generating a colourful personal resources pictorial to take home with you - a supportive tool you can use wherever and whenever you need it!

In addition to creating your personal resources list, you’ll also have the opportunity to experience each of the Tibetan 5-element breaths and how they can form part of a powerful meditation process.

No prior experience, effort or practice is required to participate. All welcome, However, please note sound therapy is not recommended for people with pacemakers or pregnant ladies in their 1st trimester. From carrying a bag, to throwing a ball, to doing yoga, strong, healthy shoulders are essential in everyday life to help prevent injuries and aid better posture
 
WHAT WILL YOU DO IN THE WORKSHOP?
This workshop is a great opportunity to practice techniques and poses that help mobilise, strengthen, stabilise and release tension in the shoulders.
 
You will be focusing on:
 
SHOULDER STABILITY:
Strength and flexibility are not separate: you need both to have strong, stable shoulders.
 
SHOULDER STRENGTH:
Since we use our shoulder muscles so much, they may be susceptible to injuries.  Yoga can help to gently build strength to help support your shoulders.
 
SHOULDER MOBILITY:
Yoga can help create mobility in your shoulders by taking them through a full range of motion.
 
SHOULDER ANATOMY:
Taking a brief look at the anatomy of your shoulders can help you get a clearer picture of how they work and how to look after them effectively
 
This workshop will be a fun couple of hours, concluding with tea and treats, especially selected to support the theme of the workshop.   Student feedback continuously highlights this as a highly popular social moment of the workshop when you can chat and ask any questions … I wonder why!

This will be a beautiful afternoon with the opportunity to give back to oneself. We will start with a gentle yoga practice starting by laying down inviting mind and body to feel more relaxed. Along the way bringing some calming breathing exercises. We will playfully explore with some gentle yoga postures allowing a natural release.
We will then move gently back down to earth for our yoga nidra (yogic sleep) quiet meditation. During the meditation you will also have the opportunity to receive some Reiki one to one from myself if you wish to. This can be hands on or hands off.  
Reiki is a system of natural healing involving laying of the hands.  Reiki is a non- invasive therapy and can be used along with other therapies. There will be sweet treats at the end of the session to ground you.

Women’s Circle and EcoNIDRA

As you step over the threshold into Circle space, you will have a sense of leaving the outside world at the door.  You will be met by someone who will greet you warmly and welcome you into the space and your senses will be met with evocative music and the smell of essential oils fragrancing the air.

As women, we often wear various masks and play diverse roles, absorbing the energies of those around us. Circle serves as a sacred space where you can shed those masks, release the roles, and leave behind the energies you've been carrying. It's a place to be witnessed exactly as you are, free from judgment, without any attempts to 'fix' you. We don't offer advice; instead, we trust that each woman present is the heroine of her own story.

In a world where spaces for women to retreat, be nourished, and experience collective care are scarce, Circle stands out as a rare sanctuary.

The structure of my Circles is straightforward:

1 I introduce myself.

2 I invite you to introduce yourself.

3 There will be some poetry.

4 Meditation follows.

5 An opportunity for open sharing.

6 The Circle gently closes.

Once we have closed our Circle we will then embark on the final journey of the day with a beautiful and restorative EcoNIDRA practice.  Eco-Nidra™ is more than just a meditation; it's a deeply relaxing and restorative experience. Derby Breathing Circle

Experience your breath, body and life in new and empowering ways (emotionally, physically and spiritually) using conscious connected breathwork, as part of a supportive facilitated group.

Our May Breathing circle blooms through Beltane (the perfect opportunity to take time for yourself, give thanks and set intentions for the coming 'harvest'!) as we approach May's 'Flower Full Moon' on the 23rd May, which dares us to push the boundaries of our dreams and toss out any self-defeating thoughts clouding our goals.

We will enjoy up to 2.5 hours together, including opportunities to share your personal process and intentions, a 45-60 minute breathe and integration time.

Perfect for new and/or experienced breathers, with demonstrations and support offered throughout our time together.

The circles will be facilitated by Rachel and her wonderful colleague Gill who have both undertaken their our own personal breathwork journeys of ~4 years and are; extensively trained and qualified in Breathwork through the Prestigious First-Breath organisation, fully insured and professional members of the International Breathwork Foundation.

The circles are £25 each and will be held here at the beautiful Elephant rooms in Draycott, Derby

Have you ever wanted to learn a short Tai Chi sequence that you could practise yourself at home or perhaps when you’re out in some beautiful setting?  Yang Tai Chi is the most widely practised style worldwide, and this 8-step form – globally recognised by the International Wushu Federation - is perfect to learn a two-minute sequence that can be practised any time, anywhere!  Suitable for beginners to Tai Chi, this half-day workshop is an excellent introduction to Yang-style Tai Chi, learning each of the postures step-by-step and understanding the martial applications of each movement.  For improvers of Tai Chi, this workshop is an opportunity to recap each of the postures and refine the movements, enriching our practice together!

With thirty years experience working in the fields of neurodivergence and learning disabilities, Andy Hodkin brings his experience, skills and knowledge to this talk.

Having managed in social work teams, residential units and short breaks units for both children and adults, Andy has gained a unique appreciation of the history of learning disabilities in the UK, and a vision for what services and support could be for the furture.

He has worked directly with children and adults with autism and learning disabilities for his whole career and continues to do so up to the present day.

As part of a learning disability management team that achieved five consecutive Outstanding ratings from Ofsted during his tenure, Andy is recognised as a leading advocate and shaper of disability services in the UK.

Now with his own training, consultancy and advocacy service based on the Isle of Man. With degrees in Social Work and Childhood Studies, and qualifications in Intensive Interaction, Signs of Safety and Communication, Andy has delivered successful training courses to clients including Girlguiding UK Headquarters, Nottingham University, Derby City Council, Manx Care, Ronaldsway Airport and the London Institute of Banking & Finance.

Experience your breath, body and life in new and empowering ways (emotionally, physically and spiritually) using conscious connected breathwork, as part of a supportive facilitated group.

Our May Breathing circle blooms through Beltane (the perfect opportunity to take time for yourself, give thanks and set intentions for the coming 'harvest'!) as we approach May's 'Flower Full Moon' on the 23rd May, which dares us to push the boundaries of our dreams and toss out any self-defeating thoughts clouding our goals.

We will enjoy up to 2.5 hours together, including opportunities to share your personal process and intentions, a 45-60 minute breathe and integration time.

Perfect for new and/or experienced breathers, with demonstrations and support offered throughout our time together.

The circles will be facilitated by Rachel and her wonderful colleague Gill who have both undertaken their our own personal breathwork journeys of ~4 years and are; extensively trained and qualified in Breathwork through the Prestigious First-Breath organisation, fully insured and professional members of the International Breathwork Foundation.

The circles are £25 each and will be held here at the beautiful Elephant rooms in Draycott, Derby

Most of the instruments are played from one place, however, occasionally they may be brought around the room and played over your body.

Women’s Circle and EcoNIDRA

As you step over the threshold into Circle space, you will have a sense of leaving the outside world at the door.  You will be met by someone who will greet you warmly and welcome you into the space and your senses will be met with evocative music and the smell of essential oils fragrancing the air.

As women, we often wear various masks and play diverse roles, absorbing the energies of those around us. Circle serves as a sacred space where you can shed those masks, release the roles, and leave behind the energies you've been carrying. It's a place to be witnessed exactly as you are, free from judgment, without any attempts to 'fix' you. We don't offer advice; instead, we trust that each woman present is the heroine of her own story.

In a world where spaces for women to retreat, be nourished, and experience collective care are scarce, Circle stands out as a rare sanctuary.

The structure of my Circles is straightforward:

1 I introduce myself.

2 I invite you to introduce yourself.

3 There will be some poetry.

4 Meditation follows.

5 An opportunity for open sharing.

6 The Circle gently closes.

Feel free to share as much or as little as you like; all that's asked is to listen with an open heart. To maintain an intimate atmosphere, I limit attendance to ten participants. Keep an eye out for an email from me 24 hours before the event, and if you don't find it, please check your junk mail!

Once we have closed our Circle we will then embark on the final journey of the day with a beautiful and restorative EcoNIDRA practice.  Eco-Nidra™ is more than just a meditation; it's a deeply relaxing and restorative experience. Studies have shown that just one session equals the rejuvenation of 3-4 hours of restful sleep. In our busy modern lives, we often neglect the deep rest we truly need. Eco-Nidra™  helps us unwind, release tension, and discover a profound sense of peace. The real beauty of it is that it's accessible to everyone, even if meditation is a completely new concept to you or it's something you've struggled to do previously.  All that is required of you is to lie down and listen to my voice.



In each session, we travel together on a triple journey; the first is a journey into our senses, the second is a pilgrimage through our bodies and the third takes us into the natural world through a specially curated soundscape. Each EcoNIDRA session lasts between 45-50 minutes and it's best practiced in the Shavasana position - lying down on your back.

The journey has been known to help ease many conditions such as stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, depression, sleep disorders, MS, pain and autism. The sound healing vibrations help to release stress, allowing the whole body to enter into a deep relaxation of harmony and joyfulness.

Everything on Earth is made up from sound vibrations and each person is believed to have their own vibrational footprint. During a sound bath the aim is to help relax your body and mind so that you can experience the sound waves washing over you.

Most of the instruments are played from one place, however, occasionally they may be brought around the room and played over your body.

Please wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a mat, blanket and cushion to be warm and comfortable. Most people lie down during a Sound Bath, whereas some choose to sit in a comfortable chair.

No prior experience, effort or practice is required to participate. All welcome, However, please note sound therapy is not recommended for people with pacemakers or pregnant ladies in their 1st trimester. If you have any illnesses or aliments and are unsure if this experience will be suitable for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Starting the day with some kundalini yoga and Japanese Do-in, we’ll then spend some time looking at an eastern approach to self-care in Spring.

As you step over the threshold into Circle space, you will have a sense of leaving the outside world at the door.  You will be met by someone who will greet you warmly and welcome you into the space and your senses will be met with evocative music and the smell of essential oils fragrancing the air.

As women, we often wear various masks and play diverse roles, absorbing the energies of those around us. Circle serves as a sacred space where you can shed those masks, release the roles, and leave behind the energies you've been carrying. It's a place to be witnessed exactly as you are, free from judgment, without any attempts to 'fix' you. We don't offer advice; instead, we trust that each woman present is the heroine of her own story.

In a world where spaces for women to retreat, be nourished, and experience collective care are scarce, Circle stands out as a rare sanctuary.

The structure of my Circles is straightforward:

1 I introduce myself.

2 I invite you to introduce yourself.

3 There will be some poetry.

4 Meditation follows.

5 An opportunity for open sharing.

6 The Circle gently closes.

Feel free to share as much or as little as you like; all that's asked is to listen with an open heart. To maintain an intimate atmosphere, I limit attendance to ten participants. Keep an eye out for an email from me 24 hours before the event, and if you don't find it, please check your junk mail!

Once we have closed our Circle we will then embark on the final journey of the day with a beautiful and restorative EcoNIDRA practice.  Eco-Nidra™ is more than just a meditation; it's a deeply relaxing and restorative experience. Studies have shown that just one session equals the rejuvenation of 3-4 hours of restful sleep. In our busy modern lives, we often neglect the deep rest we truly need. Eco-Nidra™  helps us unwind, release tension, and discover a profound sense of peace. The real beauty of it is that it's accessible to everyone, even if meditation is a completely new concept to you or it's something you've struggled to do previously.  All that is required of you is to lie down and listen to my voice.



In each session, we travel together on a triple journey; the first is a journey into our senses, the second is a pilgrimage through our bodies and the third takes us into the natural world through a specially curated soundscape. Each EcoNIDRA session lasts between 45-50 minutes and it's best practiced in the Shavasana position - lying down on your back.

WHY IS THE CORE IMPORTANT?

Balance and Stability:

A strong, active core provides the foundation for stability both on and off the mat. It helps you sustain good posture by stabilising your spine, whilst helping enhance your balance and stability, which helps to reduce the risk of falling or losing control.

Mind-Body Connection:

Focusing on your core during yoga practice encourages a greater awareness of movement and breath, enhancing your mind-body connection.

Breath Control:

The diaphragm, the primary breathing muscle, is part of the core. Strengthening the core enhances diaphragmatic breathing, enabling more controlled, relaxed breaths.

A Healthy Pelvic Floor:

The core includes muscles that make up the pelvic floor. Strengthening these muscles supports pelvic floor health, which is essential for overall stability and strength.
